Volume 3, No 7

Sometimes good things come when we wait, and this summer has been one of those times. With an unusually comfortable climate this year, summertime temperatures have been lower than usual, not much of the scorching 90's. Even the humidity, usually off the charts here in the coastal marshland, has been relatively low, making conditions here at the beach nearly faultless.

New additions to the area are also enhancing our lives. One is the Main Street Connector, a highway from the beach along Main Street in North Myrtle Beach westward to Highway 31. Due to open in August, the "connector" will help people to move quickly to points south and north. Visitors and local residents using this road will find their travel time dramatically reduced between here and wherever they are going.

Another new addition here at the beach is the August 1st opening of O D Pavilion, an amusement park located at the Horseshoe at Main Street in North Myrtle Beach. Rides, games, food, fun are all part of this new addition to vacation here at the beach, and you can find out more by logging on to www.odpavilion.com.

Of course, close by the O D Pavilion, the "Hippo," a 3-story tall inflatable water slide right on the beach between 1st and 2nd Avenues South, continues to make its gleeful presence known. Kids of all ages have been enjoying that since it opened last month. Both the O D Pavilion and "The Hippo" are priced on a per-ride basis with no charge at all to wander around and marvel at the lights, the color, and the fun that everyone is having.

So, if you have been waiting for the best time to make a break from your home routine, the best time to come to the beach is now. Especially this year, during our summer of amazing price advantages, guests have found some real deals.

Back-to-school shoppers, don't forget that August 7-9 is the special tax-free weekend on school items (for details see www.sctax.org). Take advantage of this opportunity to save money on your school purchases. Wouldn't this be a wonderful way to have the last summer fling in the water, do your shopping, and save money at the same time? Ask us about specials in accommodations discounts, too.

Golfers with an eye to the fall season have begun booking packages, so anyone who has not yet made arrangements for the vacation 2009 should consider that the summer has moved past the half-way point, with only about five remaining weeks to come to the beach before Labor Day shifts us all into the fall school term.

Ask our Reservation agent for the latest information on pricing. Best of the summertime wishes for a fabulous "dog days" of summer!

We welcome guests' reviews. Here are some of the recent ones:

The kids loved the alligator park and eating at the giant crab and hard rock cafe. I thought the boardwalk was a nice way to spend the evening, and Bully's Bar had a great atmosphere. As for the room, we had a corner suite with three bedrooms and three bathrooms, a large sitting area, and a kitchen. The wave pool was great for the kids and we could look out at the beach every morning and every evening. WOW

This hotel was sooooo beautiful! The rooms were huge, the view form the balcony was amazing, the service was outstanding and the amenities were exceptional. It was a wonderful mini vacation. I would recommend this hotel to anyone! About 10 minutes after we saw the room we called and booked it for another night through hotels.com. If we tried to book it in the office it would have cost more, but hotels.com made it very easy to book another night so it was no trouble at all. Everything was wonderful!! Thanks Seaside for a beautiful vacation.

Fun Facts

In 1876, the same year that the telephone was invented, music was sent over a telephone wire for the first time.

A Harvard researcher found that those who drink coffee on a regular basis are one third less likely to experience asthma symptoms than those who do not drink coffee.

Japan was the first country to make iced coffee popular, beginning in 1945. This country continues to sell it in cans today.

Studies show that the human body only has the capacity to absorb three hundred milligrams of caffeine at one time. Any caffeine taken after that is waste and will not provide the standard of caffeine.

The average American eats approximately 28 pounds of bananas every year.

A banana fruit grows in layers of clusters called a "bunch," and one of these clusters in the bunch is known as a "hand." It is the "hand" that we buy in the grocery, unless we buy one of the"fingers" which is the 10 to 20 bananas found in the "hand."

Western cultures tend to eat the inner part of a banana uncooked and throw away the outer skin. Some Asian cultures generally eat both the inside and outside, cooked.

In 1932, a male swimsuit called a "topper" went on the market. It boasted a detachable top that could be zipped away from the trunk bottoms. Many men who chose to go topless in this swimsuit were subsequently arrested for indecent exposure.

One way that golfers can save money on the golf course is to ask about playing another round after the first 18 holes. Some courses allow a reduced rate for a second round of 18 holes on the same day, assuming that there are enough daylight hours in the day.

Some courses offer "all you can play" after a certain time. Golfers can save money by playing golf in almost-dark when the temperature is lower than at midday. Dusk also has an added element of excitement - hit the golf ball, wonder where it went, and then find it pin high.

Golfers who buy golf balls in lots of 100 save money, especially if they play water holes (and here in the South, how many courses have no water holes).

When putting, golfers who roll the ball just past the hole have fewer putts. If the ball goes in, well done. If the ball misses the hole, ball placement is usually an easy tap-in.

Drives that go off to the left and then veer off to the right can drive golfers crazy. That is the time to check grip pressure. On a scale of 1 (soft) to 10 (vice-grip), the pressure on the club should be around a 3 or 4. Tension in the hands moves up the arms and into the shoulders, causing problems. An old adage states that the golf grip should be the same as if carrying a baby bird - soft but meaningful.

Putting uphill means that the roll of the ball is not as fast as on a flat or downhill plane. Golfers should give an uphill putt a firm shot to go where directed and avoid breaks.
