Approximately 30 species of snakes live here, according to the Audubon Society/NC in Wilmington. The smallest is a worm-eater of 6-8 inches long. The largest is the Eastern coachwhip snake that can grow to nearly 7 feet in length. Other snakes native to our area are black racers, rat snakes, corn snakes, and some water snake species such as cottonmouths, rattlesnakes, coral snakes, king snakes, and copperheads.
